Laura Callaghan Art

About me

Laura Callaghan is a mixed media ecofeminist artist, born in Margate in Kent, and now living and working in Saltdean, Brighton in East Sussex, UK.

Laura Callaghan is a British mixed media artist whose practice is dedicated to honouring the ocean and spotlighting the urgent issue of marine pollution and climate change. Based in Saltdean, Brighton, on the Sussex coast, Laura creates textural seascapes, assemblages, and experimental cyanotype works using beach-combed materials including organic materials, ghost gear, fishing rope, seawater and other recovered marine plastics. Her work transforms discarded debris into powerful visual storytelling, aligning with her ecofeminist belief that environmental and social justice are deeply interconnected.

Laura’s commitment to ocean protection has gained national attention. A painting she created for a marine-pollution campaign was personally endorsed by Sir David Attenborough for the

World Cetacean Alliance. She has been featured on ITV News and BBC News online for her environmental art activism, and was recently invited to co-curate ‘Living Sea,’ a major conservation-focused exhibition in Worthing, and has appeared as a featured artist and speaker at the United Nations Association Ocean Symposium in both 2024 and 2025.

Her work has been shown in galleries, museums, and environmental projects across the UK, with solo exhibitions and invitations to participate in major coastal art initiatives and conservation-focused shows.

Since 2016, Laura has developed a climate-positive, research-led practice with a core mission: to reconnect people with the sea, reveal the hidden stories of shoreline waste, and champion the power of collective action in restoring marine environments.

Here's a recent commission testimonial from a happy client...

"Laura created a beautiful painting for us, combining two of our favourite subjects - seascapes and sunsets. The result was a stunning piece, combining lovely shades of blue, with hints of orange, and wonderful textures, which catch the light in so many different ways, depending on the time of day and where you stand to view it. The painting has pride of place in our bedroom and we often find ourselves stopping to admire it. The commission process was very easy. Laura was keen to understand what we hoped to achieve, and we went through a selection of her previous work, picking out the colours, textures and other features that appealed to us. Then, we left Laura to it! She sent regular updates, including photos of how the painting was progressing, which were great for us to see. And, of course, we were delighted with the final result. We're so glad we discovered Laura and decided to commission a painting with her".
